Behind the Brew:
It all started back in 1988 when Bobbie Powell, driven by her passion for dogs & dog shows and a desire to find better prices on pet supplies, founded All American Pet in Eugene, Oregon. Her vision was clear: to provide quality products for pets, making life easier for pet owners and their beloved animals.
At the time, Bobbie's son, Richie, was just 15 years old. He occasionally helped out in the store, working a day or so each month. As the years went by, Richie’s involvement grew, and by the time he turned 19, he was managing the business full-time. This transition occurred after Bobbie suffered a back injury, limiting her ability to spend time in the store. Richie took over the reins, learning the ins and outs of running the store while maintaining the values his mother instilled.
Fast forward to 2021, Bobbie faced another significant challenge. A series of strokes left her medically retired, and by the end of 2022, Richie assumed full ownership of All American Pet. For over 35 years, All American Pet has been dedicated to feeding pets in the Lane County area and beyond.
Over the years, Richie has built many relationships within the community, including a notable connection with Stephen Such, the owner of Falling Sky Brewing. Richie and Stephen met through the Lane Leaders Association, a local business network where both are active members. Richie, a self-proclaimed beer aficionado, always wondered how he could combine his love for dogs, beer, and supporting local businesses. The idea struck one evening at local business event. Richie discovered that Falling Sky Brewing offered the ability to private label beers. Excited by this revelation, Richie discussed the possibility of creating a unique beer with Stephen.
His wife, Sharee, who shares his love for dogs and good beer, suggested naming the beer after 2 of their dogs, Nora and Rye, both adorable Buggs (a mix between a Boston Terrier and a Pug) and sisters from different litters. Thus, the concept for Bugg Eyed "Haze" IPA was born.
Initially, the plan was to base the beer on Falling Sky's Rain Gauge IPA. However, due to a serendipitous yeast mix-up, the beer transformed into a delightful hazy IPA, perfectly fitting the quirky and lovable nature of Nora and Rye. The name Bugg Eyed Haze was a natural choice, celebrating the dogs' playful spirit and unique appearance.
Richie and Sharee’s household is filled with furry friends: Sammy, a spirited Rat Terrier and the original beer snob dog; Nora and Rye, the Bugg sisters; and Cheeto, a large, orange cat who rules the roost. While Sammy’s discerning taste in beer is well-known, he just missed making it onto the label. Nevertheless, his influence remains a cherished part of the story.
The graphics team that Falling Sky works with skillfully transformed photos of Nora and Rye into the illustrated images on the label. They perfectly captured the essence and personality of these two beloved dogs, adding an extra layer of charm to the beer.
Bugg Eyed Haze IPA embodies many of Richie's favorite things: dogs, beer, and local business. It’s more than just a beverage; it’s a tribute to the journey of All American Pet and the community that has supported it over the years.
